Market Tour and Tapas Tasting in Cadiz, Spain!

Sorry in advance Kate... you'll probably be grossed out by several things described in this post.

Just finished up a market tour and tapas tasting in Cadiz! There was a big focus on seafood at the market so I figured it was a perfect thing to share with all the seafood junkies back home on the Cape! :) Started off the morning with churros which I had been dying for. They were amazing... probably going to get some more before heading back to the boat! Saw and tasted lots of different things from tuna (really popular/ good here) to swordfish to sea snails. There was a also a lot of fruit/ veggie stands. We tried some really good cheese call Payoyo (me and Pheobe are holding it in the picture up there^). Mom you'll be pleased to know that I KIND'VE like olives now! They are much better here. We also had Jamon which is from an animal that's a cross between a farm pig and a wild boar. They're free range but eat a ton of acorns, and you could almost get a hint of the nutty flavor in the meat. Not my favorite, but not too bad!

From the market we went to a tasting at a tapas restaurant called Garum. Everything was excellent! Here's the list:

  • Tinto de Verano (a refreshing red wine spritzer, in background of bottom picture)
  • Salmorejo (very similar to gazpacho, bottom picture)
  • Scorpian Fish pate (Almost reminded me of crab or fish cake taste-- yum! It was made from a rock fish, top picture)
  • Some grilled/ roasted veggies (middle left picture)
  • Shark (middle right picture)
  • Pork (strangely looked like beef but it was good!)
Heading back to the boat in a couple hours... we only have one rest day at sea before we pull into Casablanca, Morocco on Thursday morning! I'll be heading to Marrakesh, Morocco for pretty much the whole time because my friend Kelsey has a family fried that is accommodating us there. I'm pretty sure she works in a hotel so we'll be staying there... not totally sure. This trip definitely teaches you to go with the flow! LOL. We're working on booking a half day camel trek. I also am doing an orphanage visit/ day of service through Semester at Sea on the last day back in Casablanca. Really looking forward to it!

Hard to believe only 6 countries and 8 cities left! Pretty much halfway over... can't believe how fast it flies! Bittersweet.

XOXO
